And this is why I hate so many anime/manga fans. It's like their goal in life is to ruin everything. Although I suppose this is also what I get for going on fanfiction communities for anything even remotely popular.

music: hans zimmer & james newton-howard + like a dog chasing cars x a dark knight

I found furry 28 Days Later fanfiction. :(

I was going to post something regarding The Dark Knight, but I don't really have any coherent thoughts to put down, save for that it was awesome beyond belief, I can't wait for it to be released on DVD, and Heath Ledger will be sorely missed. Also, I'm going nuts trying to figure out who the villain might be in the next movie, should they choose to continue the Nolan franchise.

Actually, I thought of something slightly less trite to say re The Dark Knight, even though everyone seems to be saying it. It's better than one-word responses with lots of exclamation points, at an rate. The Joker was very, very well-written. After seeing Batman Begins for the first time, I was absolutely certain that there was no possible way the new Joker could replace Jack Nicholson's. And, really, Ledger's Joker hasn't. They both represent different incarnations of the same character. But, anyway, I think Nolan did a great job showing the audience a Joker that is completely, shamelessly manipulative (and, seemingly, a compulsive liar, to boot). A man who has no barriers whatsoever, and whose motivations no one understands. That, and he had a few brilliant lines. It seems a little ironic to have a character whose actual speech is so ineloquent and who is supposed to be so illogical spouting off these great bits that ring so true. Although, I suppose it's ironic, too, that a man who doesn't have the self-control to keep from muttering to himself or bursting into maniacal laughter has the ability to mastermind the sorts of operations he does, and so effectively manipulate the people he does.

Linkin Park. Valentine's Day. You've got to be fucking kidding me.

I'm very disappointed in this album so far. I haven't listened to any of their older stuff in a few years, so I can't tell whether Minutes to Midnight is better or worse. Sorry, Cristi.

music: fort minor + cigarettes

The other day, I got super lucky at Hastings. Picked up Jeff Buckley's Grace, Michael Buble's It's Time, and Fort Minor's The Rising Tied for $6 each. Jeff Buckley and Michael Buble, I already knew would be great, but I was a little wary of Fort Minor. I listened to it last night, and it's definitely worth the $6, and then some. Mike Shinoda is as good as ever (despite one or two lame lines early in the album), and his solo album serves as a reminder that I still need to listen to and probably buy Minutes to Midnight.

It's been raining like crazy lately. I walked home from work around 12:30 yesterday, and by the time I got home, my clothes were literally soaked. There's an ambulance dispatch station near my apartment, and the street outside was completely flooded. I ended up having to walk through it, and the water came up to mid-calf. I'm glad for the rain, but if it keeps up today, I'm not sure how I'll get to work.

I also may have to read David Sedaris' When You Are Engulfed in Flames. I keep hearing it praised, and it's faced out in the essays section at work, which is right next to the break room, so I see it pretty much every day.

And Oblivion Dust is releasing a new single in August. It looks like Rize released a new album in April, too. I'm so behind with this shit. However, car definitely wins over CDs.

music: aphex twin + window licker

So...Dillinger Escape Plan did a cover of Come to Daddy. Prior to listening to it, I was really confused as to how drum and bass could possibly translate to metal. It doesn't sound good, per se, but it's about as good as it can be. As weird a concept as it is, if there's one band that would meticulously pick apart a song and reconstruct it, it would be Dillinger Escape Plan. The main issue I have with it is the drums, because it's just not really plausible to be able to replicate the drum machine in the original song via an actual drum set. The bass, however, is great, and the guitar and vocals sound basically the same as they do in the original. And, if nothing else, it's a wildly ambitious undertaking, and I applaud them for having the balls.

And now it's time for me to stop being a dork and go to bed.

AMV Hell 4 prompted me to listen to Aphex Twin for the first time in years. I'm reminded now how creepy the music video for Come to Daddy is. If you want to have nightmares, watch this video. )

Also, my favorite Steven Lynch ever is in AMV Hell 4. I will never understand how Steven Lynch manages to be so hilarious while, at the same time, being a genuinely talented musician/singer.

music: tom waits + clap hands

Put in my two weeks at work today. I'm so, so happy I have a day off tomorrow. I'm fucking sick of work. The only thing that's been getting me through these past few days without telling off douchebag customers has been having random Tom Waits songs stuck in my head and my co-workers' mutual hate for the job. Julia is hilarious. I love her. I don't understand why she still works there, since she's a bonafide journalist and has written for fairly-renowned newspapers in the Northwest. And Amanda bought me a Natsuo Kirino book (Grotesque) today for my birthday, which was very nice of her. :) I guess there was a copy of Out up at Information as a go-back or something, and she brought it over and said, "This looks like a book for you." I told her that I had actually already read it, and that she should read it, since she likes murder mysteries. She brought over Grotesque and sat it on the counter, and said, "Birthday present!" I totally thought she was joking for a minute, and laughed, but the she told me there was a gift receipt in case I didn't like it. It was a very nice surprise.

My poor Tig. I think his hips are getting really bad. He's having issues walking. He makes this weird gyrating motion when he walks, because he's almost having to drag his hind legs. Poor, poor cat. I might give him a bath tomorrow. He kind of smells. :(

Lol, Scarlett Johansson.

I finally listened to the songs that are up on imeem. All I have to say is that I'm glad there's only one song from Rain Dogs on her album. Even if that one song is so devoid of the soul that only a man who sounds like a drunken transient can offer. And, I think it's too poppy, but I guess the point of covers isn't really to make songs sound exactly like the originals. In any case, glad Rain Dogs tracks are scarce.

I love Scarlett Johansson's acting, but I don't think I'll be picking up her music any time soon.

And now, it's definitely bedtime. Supposed to meet my Japanese professor for lunch tomorrow...I think. I did kind of mail her back really late. :\

music: this mortal coil + alone (colin newman cover)

Found This Mortal Coil's Filigree & Shadow, which is awesome, because it's an absolutely fantastic album, and I haven't even run into any of This Mortal Coil's music since high school. Also got some Duran Duran albums and Depeche Mode's Dream On single on LP. Someone traded in about five million Culture Club albums, which made me laugh. Boy George is so silly.

I'm finally almost done with Haunted. I found another Denis Johnson book at Bookman's today, but I think I'll read some of Alex Garland's novels, first. Mostly, The Tesseract, but I may as well read Coma, too, even though I've heard mixed reviews. Also, I need to read Snuff, but I need a little break from Palahniuk, much as I love his writing.

music: kaizers orchestra + moment

MySpace just threw me for a major loop. I was on Daniel Kahn & The Painted Bird's MySpace. I needed to log in for something or other. I forgot that MySpace automatically redirects to the main page when you need to log in. I saw "Travis Barker and The Game..." in a headline, and my brain automatically linked the headline to Daniel Kahn. Like, maybe Travis Barker, The Game, and David Kahn were doing a collaboration. Since had, like, two pints of Killian's or some shit, and spent my night watching Zoolander and it is now 2 in the morning, my brain was not able to process this, and just kind of went, "WHAT????? IS TRAVIS BARKER JEWISH????????"

Yeah.

Tonight has been good, and made up for the shitty day. :)

Also, yes, listening to Britney Spears in fivefourthreetwoone.

Okay, so, I love this site, because they have English translations for Maskineri, which is awesome. They also have the best random trivia ever. For example, with regard to Toxic Blod: "Geir has stated that the title is not inspired by Britney Spears' song "Toxic"." I don't think I'd really be that surprised if Geir liked Britney Spears, to be honest. They also have lyrics to every Kaizers song ever (in English, even; DMA also has all their lyrics, but they're just in Norwegian), even the ones that have never been released.

Holy shit, and Gnom lyrics. This website is fucking crazy.
