Hi,

a maybe rather dumb question, but I'm curious about that - it's really bothering me: How exactly (example/details) are you studying grammar?
I don't only want to hear what kind of books you're using, but rather HOW you use them? Do you make flashcards for grammar points, are you just studying and repeating some sentences for each grammar point? Are you doing a lot of exercises?

And something else: When I was in a huge Japanese bookstore last week I discovered 2 different textbooks for intermediate level.
Back then I couldn't decide which one to take and decided to first do some research.
Now it seems that only one of those books is available online: An integrated approach to intermediate Japanese
I can't remember the exact title of the other book, but it was pretty much the same, something like "introduction ... intermediate Japanese"

That's all, thanks a lot in advance :)

How do you say "I don't like talking about myself" in Japanese? I'm not sure how to write all that out...

Thank you.

Kanji recognition

There's this kanji I can't find anywhere. I tried the IME pad that comes with the japanese language tool, I've tried google (except I'm not exactly sure what search phrases to use), and found nothing.

Can anyone identify this kanji? It's the one that's circled.

Or better yet, does anyone know any websites that could help with problems like this? Like....you draw a kanji, and then a program recognizes them. Or searching kanji by components (or radicals, whichever they're called). Is there even such a thing?

Thank you in advance!

EDIT: Kanji found, thanks to [info]namidasensation. It seems I was misled by the font and read the radical on the left wrong. No wonder I couldn't find the right kanji xD
Also, thanks for all the links, I'll check them out! ^_^

Assortment of questions

(Sorry about this...)

How would one read 入力して? Why is it して and not いて? I know what the meaning is but I don't know how to read it.

Would something like 「おまえ女?!」 be judged as the "lowest" politeness level?

What would be a good translation be for 飛ばして? "Go fly?" (This is in the context of a song, one which I can't find the lyrics to... the word appears to be said by itself)

Speaking of lyrics, where would I find lyrics for bands such as Boris (rather than very mainstream things)? I can't find them anywhere using google.

What sort of pronoun is おら? What impressions does it give of the person saying it?

When would I use -おう, -よう rather than -ましょう? Is it just politness? What's the difference between -おう and -よう?

Does anyone know where I could find a good reference for computer terminology? I'm aware a lot of things are katakana-ized but there are a lot of things that aren't.

I started playing Hotel Dusk yesterday and then beat it today. Holy shit, what an amazing story. Hotel Dusk has EASILY one of the best stories in a video game ever. I can totally see this game as a great film. The game truly is an interactive novel. The characters, the dialogue, the story...they're all wonderful.

I was wondering...can someone tell me what other endings there are and how I could get them? Because I got the ending where Mila comes with Hyde, which is great!

Scrimping and the joy of cooking

Oh man, Tokyo realy put a huge dent in my bank balance. I have another week of scrimping ahead of me. I just hope that the birthday ski trip doesn't perpetuate my distinced lack of cash to much. There is nothing worse than being flat broke, especially when you know you've got a decent wage coming in. If you could see my bank balance and compare it to my pay slip you'd die of shock. Oh well, it's worth it. I wont say that Tokyo is a once in a lifetime event (going back as soon as I can) but it isn't something that you can do when ever you like and I haven't hit the slop's for a couple of years. If I was sensible I wouldn't be snowboarding at all but it's not that expensive so to hell with it.

One thing that the total lack of cash has done however, in conbination with the three weeks of resterant food I ate while OS, is renew my love of the home cooked meal. It's become quite a lovely habit to spend an hour (or more depending what I am making) in the kitchen and just cooking up a storm. I don't mean to gloat but I am a realy good cook. Very few people can fault my meals. Recently I have reinvented some of my favourit recipies and come up with a new one. So with that said I give you:

AUSSIELUNGS RECIPIE CORNER.

I'll add a new recipie next blog.

So, got a dish you'd like to challenge me to make?

Hello! Sorry this is somewhat late; I started back at uni again for the semester yesterday, and it's been awfully hectic. Apologies!

So, this is [info]heartsintact's 52nd issue! Which, in case you're not so great at numbers, means we're now one year old! [info]flimsy and I are planning some sort of special funtimes celebration post for later on in the week, but right now we'd just like to say thank you to everyone for sticking with us over the last year. ♥ It means a lot that you seem to think we're doing something useful with this little list of ours. Thank you all so much.

And without further ado, onto the recs!

Editor's Pick

And Once a Time by [info]disarm_d (Brendon/Spencer, NC-17' castle AU)
"Three days is not a lot of time," Spencer says, doing his best not to panic.

Earl Mikey shrugs. "It's Pete. He said, 'I'm coming up; you should have a banquet for me; how about Tuesday?'"

And we don't normally rec works-in-progress or fics that are not posted in their entirities yet, but I feel this is a worthy exception, especially as it's nearly all posted now. I don't remember the last time I felt this emotionally involved in a fic, and it's our birthday, so. DOWN WITH OUR OWN INFORMAL RULES! \o/

But Not The Song by [info]ignipes & [info]emilyray (Brendon/Vicky-T, Brendon/Ryan, Jon/Ryan, Spencer/Butcher, Ryan/Spencer, Brendon/Spencer, pre-Panic GSF, NC-17; slave AU)
Business at the slave market is slow.

It's been drizzling since dawn and there's a bitter wind across the plains, buffeting the lines of shivering slaves and slicing through Brendon's threadbare clothes. He tries to keep still, mindful of the way the slaves around him hiss and glare when he fidgets, but he aches all over from the cold, and his nose is running and his feet are freezing into the mud, and the merchant walking slowly along the lines is taking too fucking long.

♥ Thank you all once again. The recs suggestions post is over here.

New comment "You are an idiot" by [info]hayatenightelf on an entry in [info]jedi_iwakura

Can you guess who this is? Maybe you should check the IP address to determine if it's really me. Anyway, in reference to the other post above that you have comments turned off for, you are quite possibly the most ridiculous person I've ever been acquainted with. Why exactly should that unnamed person (no idea who you could be talking about...) watch his back around you? What the hell could you possibly do to him? And for what? For not liking you? For not wanting to put up with your psychotic/emo episodes?

As much as I'd like to sit here for an hour writing out plenty of reasons why you're an idiot and why everyone thinks you are absolutely insane, I don't have the time to waste on you.

LOL BUT YET HERE YOU ARE, signed in to this old lj that you pretty much never use. :D HI DEREK. Glad to know you're still an asshole. :3 Say hello to Ashleigh. I miss hanging out with her, and I hear that Metro Station might be touring again later this year.

Batman Vs. Me and Wikipedia.....

Jul. 20th, 2008 | 10:48 pm
posted by: [info]j_wolfspirit

After seeing TDK for a second time, I got to talking with Stephen and Whitney about what villains should be used in the next movie. Heres a list of all the main Batman Villains (Thank you Wikipedia) and what I think about them. (Thanks me!)

Bane: A steroid using psychopath who once broke Batman's back. He's not a cool character, but Nolan could do him in a fairly realistic style.

Catwoman: I know Nolan said no (Stupid Halle Berry) But Catwoman really is a cool character and she'd be an interesting distraction in his fight against a real villain. I'd kill to see her in the next movie. With Dawes dead, Batman needs a love interest, one he knows won't die on him.

Clayface: I can't believe I forgot about him. He's a cool character! It just would be really hard to do a more realistic take on him. (Which really seems to be what Nolan is going for)

Deadshot: Assasins are fun, and they could really highlight how much Batman hates guns. Plus he is a realistic gritty but still fun and interesting character. He wears bright colors, because he wants someone to someday try to shoot him.

Hush: If you haven't read Hush I won't ruin who he or she is, but he hates Bruce Wayne, and is willing to work and or use and or manipulate anyone to fuck with Batman/Bruce Wayne's life. He would use people like the Scarecrow, Deadshot, Riddler, Joker, Catwoman, etc. and half of them wouldn't even realize they're being used. Thinking about it, he's prolly better for a fourth movie (After a few more pawns have been introduced)Plus trying to figure out who Hush is would give an actual mystery for our detective to solve.

Joker: As much as it would suck to see anyone else play him, I really want to see more of the Joker, and I'd actually love to see Harlequin. Her story is actually pretty cool. She's one of the two awesome Characters to come out of the animated series. (The other being Rene Montoya) With a lot of his lines in the movie it really seemed like Nolan wasn't done with the Joker. Even though it won't be as good without Ledger I'd still like to see what might have been...

Killer Croc: Yes he looks dumb, but he's a fun creepy brute with a sad tragic side to boot.

Mad-Hatter: Uhmmm... It would be retarded.... Lol. Actually he prolly should just stay away from this one. Except maybe as a cameo with him getting punched in the face at the beggining of the movie.

Man-Bat: Again really really unrealistic, but I think Nolan could direct an awesome Batman vs Man-Bat fight as they fly through Gotham destroying buildings in the process.

Mr. Freeze: He's one of my favorite villains. My first introduction to him was from the Batman cartoon, and he's really cool. (Hahahah puns...) His story is so sad.... I really like that he's not a bad guy at all. Just a tragic hero of sorts seeking vengeance on those who destroyed he and his wifes lives. (He's a little unrealistic, but the big problem is that if Nolan thinks Halle Berry butchered Catwoman, he hasn't seen anything... What Arnold did to Freeze is unspeakable...)

Phantasm: From the animated movie Batman Mask of the Phantasm. She was created by the cartoon guys, but she is a really well written character, whose story greatly involved the Joker. It would be weird to adapt what essentially already was a movie, but Nolan could do a good job with the story.

Poison Ivy: I think Nolan seems to want to avoid female villains, but Ivy is always fun. But again unrealistic.

Riddler: Hes a fun sort of ridiculous character. He's obssesive compulsive when it comes to riddles and mysteries. The biggest of which is Batman's identity. He's a fairly realistic character, and I think Nolan could do a lot with him. If he combines a story with him, and Catwoman in the next movie, then Nolan will be my hero. *Smiles* Then for the 4th movie, Hush could show up and uses Catwoman, Scarecrow, Joker, Riddler, Deadshot, the mob, fox, and everyone else to completely destroy Batman's spirit.

Scarecrow: I'd like to see more of him. (More then his three second goofy cameo in TDK) He's a really cool, creepy villain, and his Fear toxin is a cool weapon.

Ventriloquist: Okay, imagine the awesomeness of a man with a puppet taking over the mob and reorganizing the crumbling underworld of Gotham... You can't huh? Not without laughing? so I think no one could take this character seriously, but it would still be really fun to just have a three second cameo with Batman punching his puppet in the face.

But if you think I post too much; if I don't talk to you enough or if I don't comment on your journal enough, or if I don't praise you enough; if for some reason you don't like what I have to say or if you don't read my journal as often as you think you would; if you think I'm a bitch, if you think I'm not assertive enough, if you think I'm retarded, if you think I'm too depressing, if you are too fucking high on your own goddamn self...

Get me the fuck off of your friends list.

Because I don't want to deal with your shit, either.

And you know who you are--if you're the one who has been telling a certain someone just what I've been saying on here: the honest, angry truth about them and their bitch-ass selfish little fuck-addled idiot mind and personality... Do yourself a favor and grow the fuck up. And if you're that bitch-ass selfish little fuck-addled idiot....You'd better watch your fucking back around me. You've taken too much from me already and while I've conceded that, you aren't getting anything else.

I'm fucking sick and tired of it.

Manga Translation Help

Jul. 20th, 2008 | 06:25 pm
posted by: [info]fleurdetragedie in [info]japanese

I'm translating this part in a manga and it's giving me a hard time.

"おまえにちゃんと言っとかねーと”
I know what おまえ and ちゃんと mean, and I even get that the verb is probably in ておくーとく form, but I don't get why it turned into かねーと。 I thought it might be negative, but I thought that te-oku form couldn't be in the negative?

For context, the rest of the page goes like this

「待ってよ のばら
話があんだ」

I also have a question about the ”があんだ” part. I just translated it as being "ga arunda." is this correct?

Thanks in advance!
